Between the thousands of paintings that are created and shown in galleries and museums all around the world, a very small amount transcend time and make history. This select group of paintings is recognizable by people from all over the world and of all ages and will probably continue to echo and leave impressions in the minds of people in the centuries to come. 1. The Mona Lisa (1503-1519) by Leonardo De Vinci
This infamous portrait of Lisa Del Giocondo was completed sometime between 1503-1519 and currently on display at the Musee du Louvre in Paris.
2. The Kiss (1908) by Gustav Klimt
The Kiss is a realistic yet geometric depiction of a kissing couple, completed in 1908 in Vienna, Austria. What makes this piece different than the other oil paintings on the list is that it also incorporates gold leaf on canvas.
3. Girl With a Pearl Earring (1665) by Johannes Vermeer
Considered by some to be the "Mona Lisa of the North," this enchanting painting by the Dutch artist, Johannes Vermeer, features exactly what the title infers - a Girl with a Peal Earring. Completed circa 1665, this piece can now be found in the Mauritshuis Gallery in the Hague.
4. The Maiden (1913) by Gustav Klimt
The Maiden or The Virgins contains multiple flowers, which add to the theme: evolution into womanhood. There are six women in the painting (or one woman with four sides to her persona) and all of them seem to be intertwined.
5. The Last Judgment (1482) by Hieronymus Bosch
The Last Judgment is a triptych painting, currently resides at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria.
6. The Lady in Gold (1907) by Gustav Klimt
The first of two portraits Klimt painted of Bloch-Bauer, it has been referred to as the final and most fully representative work of his golden phase.

8. The View of Toledo (1596) by El Greco
View of Toledo, is one of the two surviving landscapes painted by El Greco, lies at Museo Del Greco, Toledo, Spain.
9. Madonna in Church (1438) by Jan Van Eyck

10. The Battle of Alexander at Issus (1529) by Albrecht Altdorfer
Painted by German Artist Albrecht Altdorfer a pioneer landscape artist, portraying battle of Alexander The Great in 300BC.
11. I and the Village (1911) by Marc Chagall
The work contains many soft, dreamlike images overlapping one another in a continuous space. It is exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
12. Carnival Evening (1886) by Rousseau
The picture with which Rousseau made his debut at the Salon des Indépendants. It was a masterpiece of its kind and an impressive beginning for the artist. The approach to representation that he employed in this work is typical of “Naive Art.”
